Black & White vs. Colour

Anyone who knows me and my style of photography will know that I absolutely adore black & white photos. Whenever I get involved in a discussion on which is better, I always side with black & white: until yesterday. Yesterday I did a shoot with Ilona. When I loaded the pictures onto my computer, I was shocked that I preferred the color as opposed to the desaturated image. Here's a sample below. I think the colour is magical.

This is my favourite subject to shoot because she's always so willing to go with the flow, even when the flow involves jumping in the swimming pool on a less than warm day.

Portography

I first discovered my love of taking portraits when I did a black and white photography course as an elective during my architecture studies. I enjoy taking photo's of people as opposed to objects/buildings because people are real and interactive. You start a shoot knowing the location and the wardrobe, but how the photo turns out is entirely unpredictable and up to the energy between the observer and the observed.

Below of some of those first portraits, taken in 2006. They are all taken with a Canon A1 on Kodak Tri-X film with an ASA of 400. I then developed the film in the darkroom at Wits University and did the prints on Kentmere VC Select photographic glossy paper. When it comes to the technical quality, I am certainly lacking, but for a first try I was happy with the results.
